With the IP address of your router or modem, you can access all settings via a browser. But where do you find the IP address? There are several options to find out.
Find your router’s IP address yourself
You would like to log in to your router or modem to change settings, but how can you look up the IP address? You can find it in three different ways.
Good to know: Your provider gives you a public IP address. Your provider stands with this unique IP address connected with you. That is your IP address to the outside on the internet, and not from your router.
1. Look up the IP address via Google
If you bought a router yourself, search Google for the brand and type. Search on the model name, and put the keyword “default gateway” or “default gateway” after it.
If you want access to your provider’s modem, search the website of your provider how to log in.
2. Consult the manual of the modem-router
Another option is to consult your router’s manual. You can also find out what the default gateway of your router is there.
Can’t find the manual anymore? In most cases, you can also find the manual online. Search for your router’s name and put the word “manual” after it. The IP address of the router-modem is usually somewhere in the beginning.
3. Find out the IP address via the command prompt
Can you no longer find the manual of the router, not even via the internet? Then there is nothing to do but get started with your operating system. You may have seen it, an MS-DOS-like environment in a black window with white text.
With the right commands, information about the different network cards will be shown here. If you are connected wirelessly via WiFi, look for the section that says “Wireless adapter”.
Under the heading “Default gateway” you will find the IP address of the router or modem. This is often 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.2.1, but some manufacturers assign a completely different IP address to their router.
